The damn thing

I joined the latest generation in game consoles about 10 months ago, with the purchase of an Xbox
One S, and today, after an especially annoying sequence of interactions with said machine, I decided to put together a list of the things that are wrong with it.

In this list you'll find mild annoyances, personal preferences/disagreements and bat shit crazy stuff that I can't understand how in the name of Clarckson can even be able to exist in this world.

VR racing is da bomb

I saw these two videos recently and my desire to play racing games with virtual reality (VR) just increased.

Since VR started becoming a reality, i was thrilled by the possibility of looking around. Yes, VR is great for playing lots of things, and shooters are a very interesting possibility, but i love racing more than anything and to play sitting down is more appealing.

So, looking around. I was worried that the gameplay would become a little jerky, shaking a lot. You can see that in one of the videos but it's just for a moment.

This first one is short and sweet. The guy is amazed playing Driveclub VR with a PS4 and a steering wheel:


I don't expect much from Driveclub, but this makes me want to try it more.

The second one is a full 12 lap race in Assetto Corsa, using a PC VR rig and the Thrustmaster T300 racing wheel. This guy is good, especially because he talks us through the whole race and does a really great piece of driving:


I want to have a steering wheel again so bad, and now i need a VR too.

I already posted some things about my struggle with racing games and steering wheels around here and now i present another chapter of my battle with this freaking Fanatec Porsche GT2.

The original problem: this shitty wheel always felt strange in some times, now losing its mind completely - by mind a i mean center, it was going off center hard.

The diagnosis: this is really a shitty wheel, since i found that the source of the problem was that the center hub that connects the round thingy to its base was completely busted: the holes that once held the wheel to the base became one giant hole AND the thing that goes out the base to hold the wheel was fucked up too (see images, please).

Removing the nasty alcantara from the Fanatec Porsche GT2 wheel

I got this Fanatec Porsche GT2 wheel used, from an auction site, and i immediately had a problem with it: it reeked, really stank.

The rim in this wheel is covered with the always praised alcantara, an "artificial substitute for suede leather", says Wikipedia. And my GT2 had a good run in the sweaty hands of its previous owner. This material may be good for avoiding slipping those wet hands but it take its toll by retaining humidity and creating its own nasty populations.

Solving a basic problem: calibrating the Fanatec Porsche GT2 wheel center

I´m getting the grips with my dreaded Fanatec Porsche GT2 steering wheel lately and i´m posting some of my problems and solutions here.

A simple one was that i couldn't get it to calibrate its center position with the method described in the manual and nothing of help was found in the interwebs. Until i noticed and tried a very little detail that was in the most obvious place of them all.

PS3 and Logitech G27 wheel: compatibility list and impressions

Until this day, racing games are launched without steering wheel support (looking to you NFS Rivals) and i always find myself looking for this info on the interwebs. Seeing that this is my favorite kind of game, i decided to gather my experience in this post, to help others like me.

So here is my list of PS3 games that work with steering wheel controllers, based on my experience or information that i found on my searches (in alphabetical order).

Most of them come from my ownership of the Logitech G27 and others with the previous owned Driving Force GT.

How to connect a joystick to your android device: don´t!

I like videogames and i wanted to play them with a joystick with my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. So i´ll try to connect one of my joysticks in it, right? It´s not that simple.

I have an Xbox and a PS3, meaning that i have these controllers avaiable: Sixaxis, DualShock 3, wireless original Xbox joystick, wired Thrustmaster GPX Lightback and a generic-transparent-full-with-leds one from DealExtreme.

Did this for a contest of the game Need for Speed: Most Wanted (launched in 2005) and was selected as one of ten winners. Unfortunately they didn´t put my design in the game, they used only five of the winners. Very sad, but i won an special edition of the game and a t-shirt...

My gaming history

Here i´ll try to remember and showcase my history in gaming.

Atari
I was terrible at Pac-Man and didn´t have the most wanted games: Enduro and River Raid. I played a lot of Asteroids and more Tennis that i should have.

Besides that i don´t remember much, aside from the controller rage.

Phantom System (NES)

This one came with a great childhood memory and lesson: i woke up in the middle of the night to open my Christmas presents, that "Santa" had already delivered. I hooked up the console and started playing the awful Ghostbusters game that came with it until my mother entered the room spitting fire to my actions. I had to get back to bed and wait till the sunrise to get back to gaming.

Super Nintendo
Me and my brother got a SNES gaming system with an extra joystick and a Street Fighter II cartridge. What else could we want?

I still have the box and the console, but Street Fighter II is gone :( . Now i have StarFox, which is an awesome game, and a shitty Aliens 3 (or something). Waiting to find a great batch of games in a garage sale or something (they are expensive here!).

Tiny Toons was one other game that i had here and had much fun. At this time i rented a lot of games to, like Battletoads and an NCAA that i finished just in time to go to school at monday, after a long long weekend.

PC
A huge gap from the consoles here. I remember playing TOCA in the first laptop that i have seen, which my father brought from work. And it was so much better than our desktop computer!

MSX Expert

My gaming quest in personal computers started with an MSX Expert, which had an 8-bit 3,58MHz processor, 64KB RAM and 16KB video memory!

This MSX computer had cartridges, but they where very expensive and i had only one that came with it: Olympics II (awful). But, if you don´t know, is used K7 tapes to load programs and games, meaning that we could share them easily. Good times. You can see the process of loading a game into this PC here (sounds like an old internet modem). I played and awesome (monochrome, stylish!) Indiana Jones game like that (among others), and it crashed A LOT.

Then Need For Speed struck me. This episode marks the beginning of my "hardcore" gaming.
